Ever have tacos on the brain and no taco seasoning packet on hand? No worries. The secret to tasty tacos is right in your cupboard. This do-it-yourself taco seasoning mix tastes just as good as the commercial packets you buy at the supermarket, without all the additives and preservatives.
And as an added bonus–it’s a fun holiday gift from your kitchen. A little bit of shelf stable love! I’ll show you what I mean at the end of this post.
My DIY seasoning is great with beef, turkey, chicken and even mixed into beans. Okay…I can hear you thinking…she’s crazy if you think I have that many spices in my cupboard and it’ll cost me a paycheck to buy them. Not so. Here’s the secret–go to the Hispanic spice section at your local supermarket. There you can get smaller packets for just $.99 to $1.49 each. I got all of these for about $10.00. I’ll have spices on hand when I need them and they’ll make a boatload of taco seasoning mix. For me and for you! Let’s get started…
- 4 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper or 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons cumin
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 4 teaspoons coriander
Step one: Mix ingredients
Mix all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Store in an airtight container. That’s it!
Here is a basic recipe for using your DIY Taco Seasoning Mix:
In a 12-inch sauté pan over medium heat, brown 1 lb. ground beef, turkey or chicken until no longer pink (about 8 to 10 minutes); drain fat from pan. Add 2 tablespoons seasoning mix and 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to a low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until liquid is mostly evaporated (about 20 minutes). Fill tortillas with taco meat and your favorite condiments and savor the flavor knowing you made it yourself.
A Gift from your Kitchen
Looking for an easy homemade gift for friends and family? Something that’ll impress them with your new-found cooking savvy but not drain your wallet? Try this. Get an assortment of small air-tight jars and fill them with the DIY Taco Seasoning Mix. On a recipe card or index card, list the seasoning mix ingredients and instructions for making taco meat. I found the tiny canning jars and recipe cards at Michael’s Craft Store. Slip them into a cellophane bag along with a wooden spoon and tie with a ribbon. Voila, an inexpensive gift from the heart.
